Installing 3D Stars

Here are some "recipes" for installing 3D Stars. Should any of these recipes fail, or should 3D Stars crash with an error message, first read the readme.txt that came with the archive you downloaded and check that the problem is not addressed there. If it isn't, you could email me at alpha [at] www.zubenelgenubi.34sp.com. Or give up in disgust.

Windows NT/2000/XP - Installing 3D Stars 1.21

For these operating systems, 3D Stars comes as a single archive containing a pre-compiled binary and all the support files and data files. The binary has only been tested on Windows XP so far, but I think that it should work on NT and 2000. If you have Windows Millenium edition, then you should probably try the Windows 95/98/DOS binary, see below.

To install and run the Windows XP binary distribution follow these steps:

  1. Get the XP archive from the Download/About page (follow the link on the right).
  2. Unpack the archive into a directory of your choosing (eg. My Documents\3dstars).
  3. Double-click 3DSTARS.EXE (Windows).
  4. Pick a graphics driver. Generally, the DirectX accelerated and windowed drivers should work best.

Windows 95/98 and DOS - Installing 3D Stars 1.2

For these operating systems, 3D Stars comes as a single archive containing a pre-compiled binary and all the support files and data files. Note that the binary is not a native Windows application, that is, it will be run in a DOS box by windows 9x. It will not run at all under Windows NT/2000/XP (and probably ME).

To install and run the Windows 9x/DOS binary distribution follow these steps:

  1. Get the Windows 95/98/DOS archive from the Download/About page (follow the link on the right).
  2. Unpack the archive into a directory of your choosing (eg. C:\3dstars).
  3. Double-click 3DSTARS.EXE (Windows) or type RUNDOS at the command prompt (DOS)
  4. Pick a graphics driver. Which driver is appropriate depends on your system, but "autodetect" should work.
